Perhaps Rank will let you act more like a Warship the higher it is? Such as Merchants stopping for inspection, or other Faction Warships more likely to attack during times of conflict?

This has been one of the other things about ST that annoyed me just a bit. I hate getting stopped in my own faction space by some other faction that has detected illegal cargo because I don't have a permit with them. Or Independents that do the same thing. Their not suppose to care about trade permits ,yet they'll enforce them. I would like in ST 2 that when I'm in my home faction space to be the one doing the stopping and enforcing and confiscating. Sorry ... you're a Star Trader, not a Faction warship. We will do our best to make ST2 an improvement over ST RPG, but we cannot eliminate all the game's mechanics or it will become flat. What one person reports as slightly annoying other people report as their favorite part of the game. We will do our best to maintain a balance between all the parties. Actually... just an idea but.. when starting the game could you choose to be a Faction Warship? Doing so would forfeit your right to free passage through other Faction areas but start you with a bonus rep in your factions. Also, if you ever went against your own faction they would label you a traitor and a banned person. Just elements for roleplay, and throwing ideas at the wall.

that make sense in a way Brutus Aurelius. Why have the military rank if it's just for access to the ship yard. Perhaps during a Solar War is when you could act like a full military ship and do the enforcing\confiscating. It would be like the faction called in the reserves (you) to help out. In ST even though you're just a single star trader, you get a bonus for acting like a warship when you take action against the other side.

Think Top Gun fly by And in line with that ideal; I wonder is it possible that if your rep is "shoot on sight" level of bad with a faction; when you encounter a ship of said faction gunning towards you if your negotiation is high enough you can bribe the ship to leave with a skill check? Kinda like with mutinous crew. That's my hope with ST2; there's not enough games out there that provide a viable non-combat playstyle, and that is one of my favorite aspects of ST.

The combat preamble system in ST2 will be more sophisticated than ST RPG and allow more options than ST RPG.

I'm going to stop pestering you now, because even a God Emperor gets tired of questions.
