So I had an idea for a great group. Put it together and was moving along on NMI. Things seemed to be going ok but very early I'd spent a talent point on Kjartan and later decided it had been spent to early, but not a major issue worth re-spec while party was just getting into the Ratkin Warrens under North Fort.
In fact seemed that despite the early miscue on my part that it was going to be just fine. Then after clearing that first level and killing my first couple Deathkin with relative ease I was sure things would be fine.
Of course that's when the party at level 11 walked into the ambush on second level and a horribly bad spawn that had Kincaid immediately under fire from 4 Shaman and several Bowrats ended the Ironman run.
Gave things a day or so then set the party up to try again. Taking great care along the way not to repeat my previous errors. Had cleared the West Road, North Fort and Korvain's Trench. Party was just shy of 9th level and I was heading into the ambush at entrance to Nordhall.
Got in put Kjartan and Fyona where I wanted them, was using Selen's Sly look to clear fog before setting off the ambush and then it happened.
Fat fingered it, thought I had Sly Look selected, but instead Selen takes off running straight into the ambush trigger to south. Two days of extremely careful play down the drain in 5 seconds due to one momentary lapse of failing to double check that I actually had the desired talent selected. Now I've got to wade through all that stuff again.
The party works great and has real potential. They're not overly fragile or having major flaws that I can see. But bad luck or my own miscues are killing me and it's really ticking me off at present.
By time you get past the Great Shaman a party has developed enough and has the HP that minor miscues aren't necessarily fatal to an Ironman run. The slog to that point though can drive you crazy as seemingly one bad spawn or false move spells near instant disaster.
Won't try starting over again tonight, going to watch some TV and try calming down but hopefully 3rd times the charm starting tomorrow.
