Like the title said, is there a ship build/play style where you avoid faction space entirely by travel across the backwater of the Quadrant?

Not a long-term strategy. Interacting with factions and faction-space is what is at the core of the game. Traversing red space is kind of a means to an end. Something you have to do, but not your purpose in life. Kinda like sleeping really. Although, cats do sometimes make it a purpose.
Yes, you could become very good at red-zone travel (ship with high sails, good pilot, warrior, strength (in anticipation of an Alien), but remember that independent worlds only provide half the upgrade categories that you are used to, and Independent equipment (torps, armor, sails, kitty litter) is only marginally better than Steel Song Cardboard.
Your fuel consumption will never get to zero ... if you're good with pilot and efficiency you can get it below 0.5, but if you get a hole in one or more of your sails, your ship will be drinking water as fast as you can pour it.

Pity, that would be the ideal pirate playstyle. Cruising the back alleys of space avoiding Faction patrols. Something oddly romantic about the concept, very firefly esque

I need to watch firefly ... it's on my to-do list ... You can certainly spend long periods in red zones .... and it can be years or even decades between faction visits, but you invariably get back to faction space sooner or later for necessary upgrades/repairs/gear/rumours/contracts/good stuff

If you really want to avoid faction space, I suggest the following:
Set faction to Indy to get access to all upgrades on Indy worlds Set class to Star Trader for more Indy star port repairs Get mechanic officer to reduce chance of damaging accidents If unlocked, consider getting the W-F recycling plant propulsion upgrade Make sure to have luxury rations if there is even a chance you will need them.

Like the title said, is there a ship build/play style where you avoid faction space entirely by travel across the backwater of the Quadrant? Sure -- similar to the "Indy Only" Pirate build. In addition to the great tips Posted by resistor this build usually needs a lot of W-F offset tech like Recycling Plant. Escape Shuttle is pretty critical in the 'all red sectors' build because you're bound to hit more Xeno. There have been requests from people playing this build to be able to reprogram the navigator to avoid Green, but the number of requests for this (and other features for all Indy builds) are pretty low so the priority never spikes. That's probably the hardest part about the all red sector builds is that you have to fight with the Ship's navigator about avoiding green.
