It seems too difficult to me, I never managed to get far enough away from a fight to not have the 'hostiles still too close' msg show, not even when sacrificing runners or escorts.
Especially in early game when you did not have an opportunity to lvl athletics much escape is impossible.
I don't think it should be that hard to escape. Maybe there could be some drugs that grant additional MP or smth or the rules could simply be a little less harsh. I really enjoy playing perma death but the game simply ends once there is an encounter with enemies which are too strong. I do think escape should be an option in that case.
Any opinions?

blaa - when the game checks distance to enemies, it checks all of your team (Escorts, Runners, etc). So, you all have to get away. If you have an escort, it is going to be really hard to flee.

As you increase the difficulty level of the game, you better be prepared to die a lot. Tactics that worked before won't help you. Enemies are smarter and harder to defeat. While it can be frustrating, this is what makes CK a great game. It's always new each time you play it on a higher level. You need to come up with new strategies to win. There's lots of good tips on the forum. The great grävling and slayernz are master CK's.

How many tiles must I be away from the nearest enemy? Do you know by chance? Feels like it must be a lot. Oh and thank you guys for replying so reliably to any questions on such an old game

I myself don't know an exact number of tiles you have to put between yourself and the enemy, but how fast you can move, total spaces, seems to play a big part. If you can't put distance between you each time you move, then its really harder to get away. The enemy will usually choose one person to go after. That's the one you want to use as a decoy. They need to be able to take a lot of hits or be able to stay out of weapons range while they lead the enemy away. Your main CK should be moving away each chance they get. The best thing to do is move as much as possible then try to escape. If you get the message, then wait till the next combat round, move and try again. Certain parts of the city have narrow paths and make great choke points that can force the enemy to have to take a long way around. They'll have to move away from you giving you better chances at escaping. It takes time, practice, and careful observation to learn and see how to work this strategy. Once you've got the basic understanding of the patterns, it becomes a good way of avoiding fights and not building up heat if you can do it quick. Long rounds of trying to escape can sometimes build up more heat than just fighting.
As for things that can give you an extra AP or two, keeping your MP above ten point gives a boost. This can be done easily with drugs. There are also a few implants that increase or set your total spaces you can move.

You know I've never had a successful escape. I've ended up going on the offense every time because it's more of a positive outcome ... of course, I've beefed up my team and are carrying a large range of weaponry. If they take me on, they're going to hurt because of it. I do, very often, die painfully because of this approach, but usually only during the "build" phase of the game. Same with Star Traders for that matter - once you get over the build-phase, you're usually going to be good for most encounters.
