As the title states...
When you create a colony ship, the creating colony should have its population reduced.

Thanks for the suggestion! We've evaluated that option a number of times and have decided not to put it into the game.

I actually re-tested this rule just a few weeks ago and for many reasons, I'm very glad that we saw how badly it hurt the player and left it out.
This is one we've considered a few times but I can say with absolute certainty that it is a rule the average player would hate.

I am cool with that, but... there is always a but...
What about having an upgrade in the tech tree that could be added to the colony ship to, reduce pop by 1, or 2 depending on tech level, and in return you get a bonus on the newly established colony. I know there are other techs that provide colony ship bonuses, but I know that mid game I have big planets that can spare the pop drop, but the new planets could really do with added support. It also helps in the mid game to ease pop growth issues on core planets, especially if you are forced to focus on other techs and are unable to work on techs to help with growth.
Just a thought...

Perhaps in a future game where that is baked into the design from the start.
