Hi,
Browsing through the forums, I see that there is so much unknown about torping. I want to create this thread to put these on place.
Some typos and misconceptions I have found:
Torpedoes damage randomly and have a huge chance of destroying a ship
The most wrong among the typos! Torpedoes don't target randomly!
1. They don't target guns and torpedoes
2. They pierce through armor
Sure, they can cause some nice hull damage, but when the armor is sufficient, the ship survives most of the time. Only once have I destroyed a ship with torpedoes! The rest were engine demolitions and in some cases captain kill. On the other hand, I destroyed quite a bunch of ships targeting engines, but hitting torpedoes with guns.
Refills are expensive and to be efficient you need to pay to refill them to be effective
Another wrong typo. Torps cost only $760. And why would you buy them? Sure, the ones bought from your home faction are the most efficient, but honestly, compared to just rearming, the bonuses aren't that great. And rearming is always easy, just find a warship (and actually, I rearm about 90% of torps with success.
For torpers: When you run out of torps, you are sunk
I haven't really seen this typo that often, but frankly put, if you land at least 8 torps, you can be sure that the opposition can't cause too much harm. They are understaffed, many of their engines are crushed...
Stealth helps you target the torps
I have seen this typo a couple of times. Not a right one though. It may influence your chances, but actually, from my experience the torps rely heavily on tactics.
Bigger hull ships take more torps to beat
In this case it counts that the more, the merrier. The more engines a ship has, the easier it is to crush them badly. The more you crush, the easier it gets. It is all about landing successful hits.
Only Cadar likes torping
Wrong. Many battleships of all houses and syndicates have at least 18 torps! Only Cadar flagship has 40
The torps are inefficient against the xeno
If you meet a heela alien of 350% of your level, then probably yes. But on Insane you can go alien hunting with no real problems, since it's not that easy to find a hi stealth ship even among aliens
The torpers like to sit at ease and just hit the torpedo button until the opponent explodes or surrenders
It's not that simple. If you press the wrong torpedo button, you may detonate yourself!
Use them only in long range
Wrong, just don't use them in short range, or you may explode.
And now to the facts...
It's true that hitting with a torpedo gives you an escape bonus in the next turn.
Torps aren't too useful against very hi level xeno, but the stealth still gives you a great opportunity to escape. If the xeno is on your level though, you can outtorp them easily with well designed captain.
Sadly, torps hardly have any upgrades and they are all in an armament the section
If you have troubles hitting your opponent, but you deal the first hit, you have a really great chance of winning, so feel free to push it to victory
Torps are highly susceptible to being hit with guns when you are trying to hit engines and detonate whole ship (pilot skill and tactics make it more accurate though)
The Cadar have two buttons for every torpedo, one sends out a peace torpedo, second one serves vudka.
What is your experience with torps? Something I missed? Strategic tips regarding torps?
