Forgive me if it's already a thing, but can having a high stealth affect how much rep loss you get from breaking embargoes. Or having a high stealth can have a chance to not get caught? It'd help with actually playing smuggler, stealth can help with embargoes, smuggler contracts, and trade ban (do you lose rep by selling the banned item?).
(I'm not sure if this is possible for ST1, but I'll still ask, can smuggler have an ability along the lines of contraband trading? Affecting buy/sell prices, so it's easier to trade with it to make profit other than that rare chance you can buy electronics cheap?)

Stealth doesn't help with merchandise at all and not even charisma or negotiation skill is able to influence the reputation losses. As for smuggler contracts, having huge stealth indirectly helps with them, since Ignore gives you greater chance of succeeding. As for the last point... If you don't have huge rank and if you have low enough negotiation (I would recommend no more than 30), you can still make more than enough profit from regular trade routes. I was able to make about 50,000 per travel, which is actually quite enough for me, considering stuff like reputation gains etc. Also, shortages (and therefore ability to sell electronics for as much as $5,000!) and surpluses aren't really that rare, if you abuse rumors like crazy (recommended spy officer as he gives you the ability to buy rumors for free, even though the button still keeps saying that it costs $100). So there isn't really a need for a smuggler to influence the prices themselves.
From the logical point of view though, I think you have a point. A smuggler is supposed to smuggle stuff, but with trade permits you aren't really smuggling. Maybe if smuggler could sell contraband without trade permit, but with greater profits while doing so, and therefore with risk of reputation penalty, it would make more sense to pick him.

Can you at least point out that you're just guessing? Stating things as facts makes it more confusing for other players that are trying to figure out the game.

In ST RPG the Stealth skill is a pair with Pilot, and is already used for more tests in the game than any other Skill. In this case, you're looking for the Skills Intimidation, Negotiation and the stat Charisma. These are critical to Smugglers. Not that Stealth isn't important, but it just isn't an Urban Zone skill. Thanks for posting!!!

Sorry looks like I will have to run a charisma build merchant to see the difference.

In all honesty, my luck sucks, I rarely find surplus/shortage for contraband. I have on occasions, been able to make profit with them though.
So wait, negotiation and stuff helps with rep loss when selling into embargoes? I never noticed that. I never paid attention either.
Templars going smuggler hunting, eh? Well, I've had Xeno come after me. Never Templars yet. Yet.

I do hunt for rumors. I play as a merchant often, I learned to keep a eye on rumors, and to always check for them and stuff.

Really looking forward to Star Traders 2! ST RPG #1 is coming up on its 6th birthday, amazing. Six years...that's like the time between Mortal Kombat 1 in arcades, and Zelda: Ocarina of Time for console. Amazing indeed. Good work Trese bros.
