What is the difference between Salute and Avoid. When I see Salute I everytime take Salute. But does Salute bring any benefits?

If you avoid in non-faction waters, you lose reputation with the faction that owns it.
Some times it is better to lose that rep than to submit yourself up an inspection which could end up in lost contracts, confiscated gold, or imprisonment/death should your rep be low enough.

You also stand to lose Shot & Powder to military ships with low rep if they search you.
