Actually, I have found another obstacle in this build today... You need decent tactics to be able to pull back in boarding efficiently. But in offensive boarding tactics don't have that much of a significance.. .

I guess it's probably next to impossible to find the perfect balance right now. You generally need high pilot, reasonably high tactics, high warrior... and decent intimidate. It's not going to work properly, since there is just too much to keep high.

I only got to level 25 last time because I stayed on good terms with all factions, so I'd only have to fight Independents. I'm going to try one more time, and I will have Pilot 1x, Warrior 2x level, and rest into Tactics (plus the necessary points in Intimidate, and a few in Stealth). UPDATE: Died at level 8 to a Lvl 23 De Valtos pirate. Lost the same way I lost my last board/gun hybrid Captain. I could've survived if I focused on boarding him, but I got him down to 1 crew and I didn't want to lose any more crew of my own. He rammed me several times, and at the final turn I decided to board him anyway. The board was successful, and it killed him, but I... destroyed the rest of my hull in the boarding action.

Going to suck in guns and torps evasion, but it seems your boarding won't suffer.

Will try again after "new meta" update, but that could be a long time. Amazon appstore is still on 5.9.43. Never mind, Amazon is taking too long. Will keep trying anyway.

I think I might've unintentionally made progress on the hybrid board/gunner idea. So, I was experimenting and trying to make a build that expected to get boarded. The plan was to build to slow enemy boarders down as much as possible while pounding them with barrage guns at zero range. If it worked the way I intended, it could've been a new kind of alien hunting build. It didn't work the way I was originally hoping. I couldn't seem to hit anything with my barrage guns at 0 range, which might've been because my ship had LOW agility. I could, however shoot stuff just fine at mid/close range. I had Intimidate and Tactics 1x my level, Stealth 1/4th my level, and the rest of XP into Pilot. Strength was kept at 1.5x level. I didn't invest in Warrior, but I had 30-something weapons. My ship was an Assault Hawk (220 Crew, 42 Guns, MEDIUM/LOW) with the upgrades Dreadnought, Bulkheads, Bridge, Titan Components, and Hyperion. My officers were the Pilot and Mechanic. Third slot is empty because I was looking for a Templar Hydra. This build can actually board, pull back, and gun effectively. I discovered it was decent at boarding when I was desperately trying to stop a Pirate from ramming me. This build is still alive and at level 26. I might try reducing Intimidate and investing some points in Warrior. Also, I'm still on v5.9.43 UPDATE: Died at level 27 to a level 50 Rychart Bounty Hunter. I was boarded a lot and they killed my engines.

Another attempt; another death. I died at level 15 because I was to eager to start fighting. When I died, my build was similar to my last attempt, the largest difference being that I was trying to get Intimidate and Tactics both up to 20, neglecting other Skills to do so.
Next time, I must remember to get to at least lvl 20 before fighting.

Another attempt; another death. This time I died at level 30 (a new record for my gun/board hybrids). My skills were: Pilot 41, Tactics 39, Stealth 8, Warrior 17, Intimidate 30. Strength was 2x my level. I changed build plans often mid-game, and when I died I was aiming for higher Pilot/Tactics. My ship was an Admiral Battlecruiser with the following upgrades: Battle Prow, Plasma Cutters, Bridge, W-F Recycling Plant, and Hyperion. I had 50 weapons. Officers were Templar, Pilot, and Military. I died duelling a level 60 pirate captain. I was down to less than 30 crew before the battle, and I couldn't seem to hit him with guns, so I had no choice but to board (or surrender... or ram... I chose poorly).
If anyone's wandering why I keep posting these, it's more of a journal for me to keep track of what I've tried so far, but I also hope it could help someone trying a similar build know what doesn't work, or someone might give me advice on what might work.

That's a great report. How did the Captain end up so low on Crew?

The Captain was low on crew because of a number of previous battles, including at least one where the enemy got the first board on me (I was trying to gun Decks first). I didn't immediately seek to recruit more crew because I was short on time for completing a contract I had.

Strength doesn't increase your level, which helps keep your build intact. Wasn't there an update a couple months back that changed that?

Strength doesn't increase your level, which helps keep your build intact. Wasn't there an update a couple months back that changed that? v6.1.1 changed it. It also reduced Stealth level weight to 1. That does not mean everyone has access to v6.1.+
