What's a good Explorer build for high difficulty levels (Crazy or above)? Recently I've been playing a series of Explorers on Crazy, but it seems that around lvl 15 or so I inevitably get an overpowered Alien ship show up out of nowhere and wipe out hours of careful play in an instant. Is it actually possible to have a successful Explorer build on high difficulty levels? What am I doing wrong? Following various explorer guides on this forum, I've been mostly putting XP into Explorer (obviously), Pilot and stealth (try my best to escape hostiles and not be found by them). This approach generally works reasonably well in the early game, but around lvl 15 it seems that either I'm not levelling up fast enough to keep pace with the game clock, or there's something fundamentally weak about my build, and I start getting attacked by high-level pirates, usually with disastrous results, and then Aliens just show up to pick up my remains afterwards. Either that, or I'm doing something fundamentally wrong??

Five important stats for explorer:
Explorer (no need for better than 30) Pilot (doesn't need to be too high though, since you don't need wf Stealth (should be at least 110% of your level to be able to Ignore successfully Strength for surviving bad events unharmed Intimidate to maintain huge crews better (I recommend 1 intimidate per 4 crew)
Also, having at least 2x more solar Sails than you have hull size is important And you need to buy an escape shuttle. If you can't escape from an alien and he closes range on you, surrender! You lose hp, but survive.

Weird, I seem to have also hit the -4hp escape shuttle thing... my last captain was attacked by an Alien but after surrendering he died. He had 4 HP before that.
Well, either that, or surrendering when the Alien has boarded you is equal to automatic death?

I don't know for sure. But I would say, if you let the alien take you down to 4 hp, you surrendered late.

Somewhere in the forum, there has been said that if you surrender to an alien with an escape shuttle, you lose a couple of hp (usually 2, but there has been a reported case of 4 hp lost). So redartrats just asked whether surrender while being boarded by aliens is an automatic death, or he just lost 4 hp due to the surrender.

Explorer is one of those sub-optimal builds. Combat-oriented builds have the benefit that 100% of stats directly contribute to encounter survival. That said, it's certainly possible to have a successful explorer on high difficulties.
You want to make sure to have a huge sails/hulls ratio, a fast ship, and a lot of stealth. Escape shuttle helps, too.
