I figured that selling a faction its own records gave reputation because you kept the data away from enemies. If you go to the market, buy some records, and immediately sell them to the palace, you are commended for keeping vital data out of the marketplace where it could fall into the wrong hands. If you spy on a planet (without getting caught) and then land and sell the records, they just assume you managed to catch an enemy spy, and are kind enough to keep the data away from the other factions.

RushSecond,
Totally agree with your assessment.
In the end, if the Captain's skills are enough he can Spy without being seen and sell the records immediately for huge Reputation and money rewards.
I will point out that there are some ways to gain as much as an 800% bonus to the number of Records created for each successful Spy operation but they may not be immediately obvious =)
PS: not spy war

It seems like it shouldn't matter where the records came from.
If I spy on a planet that is part of an intelligence war, I'm creating a record that has value to everyone. They should be happy if I sell the record to them and not their enemies.
I like that planets will buy their stuff back, and when I sell valuable items the exchange consumes them. For all I know I'm buying records on the planet and turning them over to the proper authorities.

dickythreesticks,
You are completely correct on all counts.
The bonus we're talking about are for how much / how often Records are produced by Spy.
I think it makes sense that Factions buy records without asking where they came from.
Information is powers =)

I understand the thing that give you faction rep, but what exactly gets you XP?

You gain xp for everything you do traveling through space, fighting, landing, exploring/harvesting

literally every single action in the game can grant XP

I guess I was wondering how much XP different actions generated. Does a fight that's part of a contract generate more than a random pirate encounter? If I'm trading under an embargo or alliance, does it make more XP than just fueling up at an independent exchange?

Yes, yes, yes to your questions.
Contracts, rumors and difficulty all factor into XP earned.

I kinda like the randomness of records. If records were tracked I see myself getting very confused very quickly. Don't get me wrong, it would add a cool new dimension to the game, but it sounds like a nightmare.

My heartfelt thanks to the fools of Clan Javat. They were my chosen enemy for my current level 51 Cadar Pirate character, and they decided to declare war on my four best allies. After a quick check to make sure I had Trade Permits with them all, I loaded up on 90 water-fuel and headed for Gamma-Javat II, whereupon I proceeded to blockade the living s*** out of it. After four or so refueling trips, and the largest notification pop-ups I've seen on the phone, I ended up with over 450XP and about +1000 rep with four factions at the same time. "Your Blockade has assisted the war with..." for Steel Song, Cadar, Rychart and De Valtos I am now level 63.
