For most of my captains, I never attack merchants or smugglers (unless they are a bounty target), and I never take contracts against the Steel Song Clan.
What are your self-imposed rules (if you have any)?

I avoid taking contracts against my home faction, but will still get involved in spy and solar wars against them.

I used to have some, but it really depends what class I'm playing and whether my character has a real persona or not (usually the characters created for unlocking awards don't). In general, I... - don't attack merchants.
- don't attack independents.
- destroy all pirates, for they are the scum of the universe. Except when I'm playing a pirate, in which case all other pirates are the scum of the universe, and I am just plain awesome.

I don't take contracts against Steel Song, I only quit if I'm in friendly territory (with exceptions of course), don't attack merchants, only enemy smugglers if encountered in friendly territory, attack pirates... and a few more.

I have only two self imposed rules. 1.. When you dominate the game, go hunt aliens 2. Do not abide by any other rules I attack anyone I want and everyone I want

My rules are far more sinister lol. Salvage all pirate and military ships I attack, and enslave their crew if I'm below optimal numbers.
And if my crew destroys a merchant ship because of their incompetence, I have a brief moment of silence in respect for the lost cargo. Lost smuggler ships results in execution. I don't tolerate lost artifacts. (I use a single board action with 1 warrior and 8 strength causing a massive thinning of my own crews' numbers)

I don't salvage military ships. Fighting a military ship strips you off a rank and death warrant, but keeps you the trade permit. Salvaging or destroying military ships strips you off everything including the trade permit. Since I always have at least a trade permit with everyone, salvage of military ships is out of the question.
