I have been playing the 64,64,64 map on normal. I got early contact and seemingly got the jump on the xeno. 6 fighters laid waste to around 40 ships. The last engagement made me wonder. My ships fuel was at bingo status so I was just about to turn home as I had my defenders rolling out to come lay waste to the last ship. I waited a turn to keep them together on return and the xeno missle ship bugged out at made a run for deeper xeno controlled areas. Is that random or does it realize I can kick his ass currently... or a mixture of both?

The Xeno is pretty smart-- If it knows it can't win, it will back off, especially in the early game.
I seem to recall the devs saying you can actually make the Xeno learn that you aren't to be fu*&ed with by smashing them relentlessly the first time you meet them. It will note that you are a crazy MF and stay away from you until it gets more powerful. I've done this several times to great effect. It may depend on the type of Xeno, however, so beware the more agressive types.
What AI are you against?

Zenga are the xeno. I was exploring very early on and came across a planet they were on. I kept away because I only had just made my first set of new colonies. So I leaned a bot more to my military, kept subsidizing DV builds to keep up with Cadar and Thulun (of course lol). Slapped together a fighter with VM Whirl II, heavy armor, and a battle crew. Focus in guns and evasion for build out. My first venture I kicked them around with ease. Brought in another set of fighters and let mine repair/refuel, went back in for almost an exact copy. They seem aggresive as in they send in waves and many ships, seem to like torp boats. Have just now started seeing a few world killers.
