I've been wondering during deepspace travel you're more likely to damage your sails right? I could swear that when I plot my courses to avoid the 8 squares directly around a sun or dead planet I experience fewer accidents and crew death. Am I just imagining things?

Yes, you are imagining things. The red and the green markers on squares indicate their risk.

Wait rad storms can be anywhere right? Or just near dead systems?

Wait rad storms can be anywhere right? Or just near dead systems? They can occur almost anywhere.

"There's a centuries-old radiation storm far removed from civilization at the sector -8,5. If our ship were to venture inside, we would die an agonizingly slow death, while being melded into the surrounding molten waste."
"That's no radiation storm, that's a star."
"Sorry, I meant sector -8,6"
"Yeah, I've seen that too. It's terrible."
