I bought Templar Battleforce/Star Traders 4x4 a while back and I've been putting off playing them because I can only try and learn one incredibly deep and interwoven set of game rules at a time Am I missing out on a lot of backstory/lore that better informs the ST RPG experience by not at least casually spending some time with the other two?

Iirc, as far as the timeline goes, ST4X and TBF are set after STRPG (ST4X is at a pretty similar time though iirc)
ST2 tells the story of what happened after all the quadrants colonised in the exodus (quadrants seen in ST4X etc) were 'joined up' by hyper warp gates.
So you won't miss much of the backstory directly for STRPG, but it is cool to see how the story progresses towards ST2. TBF in particular has some neat lore about the Templars, xeno and narvidians, for example.

ST 4X empires is a focused 4X strategy experience, and while it will help you understand what happened at the end of the Exodus, it does not have deep story elements. The story elements of Templar Battleforce are front and center and will help you learn a lot about the world of ST RPG.

Iirc, as far as the timeline goes, ST4X and TBF are set after STRPG (ST4X is at a pretty similar time though iirc) Actually, both are set before ST RPG. Templar Battleforce opens at 12.01 AE -- almost 40 years before your Captain sets sail for the stars in ST RPG. The end of the Exodus came at very different times for different splinter groups of the fleet. In ST RPG, you're 50-60 years after the main of the fleet stopped, settled colonies, engaged in the Faction Wars over planetary rights, and then finally settled down "a bit". The ST2 Lore Book will include a timeline with games start-points clearly marked.

I'll diversify when whatever promising Captain I'm playing explodes into a mist of shrapnel and waterfuel. This usually happens right when I think I'm figuring things out and recently I think I'm figuring things out haha
