I saw the Engineer talent of "Fortify Position" and it got me thinking- an engineer builds, so rather than just giving itself a buff to fortify a position, could an engineer physically alter the maps?
E.g. an Engineer could "build a fortification" to add +1 Defense or +1 Attack. The effect on the actual map would be to add the red or green overlays for +1 Defense or +1 Attack to whatever square has the constructed engineer fortifications. Thereafter, other Templars could use those fortifications.
This would probably be a relatively powerful talent, so it would be available later on a talent tree, and I would suggest it costs maximum AP- 4 or 5 and it can only be used once per map at level 1 of the talent, and twice at level 5, and thrice at level 10--the engineer does not have enough supplies with itself to build more than one fortification.
Another balancing factor for this talent is that Templars are usually run and gun--they don't often sit in one place and hold- so it is situationally powerful at best.

Vae Victus - very cool idea for sure! I am not sure this is in the cards, as it would require space in the saved game format. I will check with Cory to see if it is feasible.

Keep in mind that the AI uses some precomputed matrix for the maps -- so changing the maps on the fly would also require the AI to be re-coded to allow changes during the game.
Maybe for a future game.

I have not particularly noticed the AI xenos take advantage of existing "+1 Atk/+1 Def." squares currently, so I do not think much if anything is lost if the AI is not able to adjust to take advantage of those squares.
Obviously, you know your audience better, so I guess it would then be a balance of- will doing this be amazing, or will it lead to complaints? I think it will be amazing and will add much to the game, and I won't complain if the AI does not take advantage, but I understand that others in your audience may differ.

It isn't an issue of taking advantage or not, it is an issue of the mesh being out of data alignment and the game crashing hard on memory corruption checks inside the mesh. Our audience tends to frown upon crashes.

Ah! That does seem like a rather large problem if implemented. Thank you for the answer and for considering the idea!
