Well finally, I got a Squad through the campaign with no Templars lost on Ironman!
Because I'm stubborn, I refused to beat the campaign on Ironman if I lost a Knight.
I have 18 saved games, where I've lost a Knight or am in a jam that I'll go back and see if I can salvage and experiment with. I have probably at least as many tries at Ironman I simply deleted as hopeless lol.
We had some epic near death experiences, a 6hp and 4hp left on a Scout and Engineer early being the closest calls. We technically have two defeats, as Nyra heat locked in Litch range and died twice at the western pillar on Extermination Protocol before she finally blocked the plasma on the third go. The immortal Nyra Ridaan!
The Hive Mind was a fitting final test, it took us 31 turns and we had to kill 66 to get the job done. Nyra and our Paladin used all healing available, plus calling out Meditechs. Captain's Squad got chased all around the Mind, all the way to Nyra's TP. I had to deploy my back up Engineer with heat sink to save my Captain's Squad, who had already had two members lock for two turns. Without Crippling Fire on my Scout we'd have been overrun. So...many... Narvidians...
For the first time ever I had to skip a conduit in our flight. My last two turns we had gathered at the Mind. I always take potshots at that Worm by his head with my Scout as we pass by. My Paladin was heat locked both turns, one Soldier locked but came unstuck for the finale. I had no attacks left when my second Soldier raced over from the Worms deathbed and finished it off with two Burst Fires. What an absolute rush when the Mind shrieked it's death knell.
A huge thanks to the community, I learned so much from you all. I really had a blast perfecting the Squad I have, and without all the advice it wouldn't have happened.
I used only twelve Knights, no Berserkers or Neptunes, though I unlocked Neptune to get at those Weapon Mods. Respecs and gear swaps were frequent. I spent all but 7 RP going into Hive Mind.
FYI: Melee Capt, 3 Soldiers, 2 Scouts, 3 Engineers, a Hydra, 2 Swordsman Paladins. Best six is Capt, 2 Soldiers, Scout, Hydra, Engineer. Second Paladin and second Scout played the least. Going forward I'll add Berserker and Neptune.
I love this game. I can't decide whether to take this Squad onto Stratos, or tackle this Ironman Hell I've heard whispered of in Spice dens.
