Hi danx55, With regard to replacing armour/torps, it is done in an urban zone, under Star Dock -> Military Base. You can only do it on a faction planet if you have a military-rank with that faction or you can do it on an Independent world regardless of rank, assuming they have enough repairs available.

seems that getting in close and boarding is the way to go To be truly successful you have to master all types of space combat and especially be able to predict what is going to be effective in your current situation. Contrary to what Cadar teach in their space academy, in some situations retreat is the best option (even when dying for Cadar is more honorable one). Also beware that ship's Captain is as important as ship itself (or more important than ship itself). So check also the enemy's level before you engage.

Prior to retreat, firing a torpedo at the enemy to signify the enemy's superiority is a must. Else they'd come back to haunt you 2 AU away. Seriously, boarding only works on low level difficulty or if your Captain is trained ridiculously high in Warrior and Tactics, else you'd DIE... DIE HORRIBLY on Demanding and above.

hi. ah ok.thanks for tip. I have been working on captain toughness. but also got a decent ship now ;-) so what is best way at higher levels? hit em with torps from further out?
btw. does taking promotions make you more of a target?
cheers dan

Sorry if I make torps seem all important (Cadarian convert here) but its more important to have higher stealth. Torps can be diminished but Stealth usage is virtually limitless.
At higher levels, enemy captains can weave through your gunshots but will have a hard time escaping torps fired with their heat signature signed, sealed and delivered.
And I don't think promotions would make others more hostile towards you. Your actions to get those promotions probably matter a lot more.
