My squad just finished Replay+, and I decided to do Yet Another Replay+. So I just worked my way through Ferarai Lance: Boarding March the second time (the last replay I did the other route instead), and decided to take things a bit slower. So I worked my way south, splitting my squad into 3 groups: cappy and scout on the left, soldier and scout in the middle, and lone soldier on the right.
Normally I'd have the lone soldier join up with the second scout, but this time he seemed to be doing relatively well on his own, plus there are a few secondary objectives on the far right of the map that he's closest to, so I decided to see how far he can go on his own. Surprisingly, he did pretty well; thanks to careful use of OW and tactical retreat, he was able to hold his own against a trickling but steady flow of xeno coming from the south. This meant stepping very carefully (since nobody else was there to do sensorkit scans, so he's pretty much going in "blind"), and retreating when the situation ahead looks too dangerous. Took out several spitters and lancers, a bunch of hunters and slayers, and even a spitting spawn tower on the way. I was quite amazed at how careful tactical play can see even a lone soldier can hold his own against the xeno by making strategic use of terrain, OW, and tactical retreat.
It was only later on that he needed some assistance, since he was starting to overheat, having to be constantly on vigilance for incoming xeno and no time to cool down, so I sent my scout sprinting over just before the extraction point to help him clear out yet another spitting tower on the way to the last secondary objective. They were both overheated by the end of it all, since I had to hurry up as the rest of the squad had already made it to extraction, but now I have a new appreciation for the skills of my soldier.
So here's an interesting challenge, perhaps. How long can you make a lone soldier hold his own against the xeno, and in which level(s) / scenarios? How many moves can you last?
(P.S. By the end of it all, I'd taken 24 turns, which is twice the target; but I've completely cleared up the level of xeno spawn towers and could just walk over to extraction without being attacked.)
