Nope ... once something is fused into the super-structure of your ship, it ain't going nowhere.
That's why it pays to have multiple ships - one you fly and others stored in dry-dock.
You can have ships that provide specialized upgrades - a Pride of De Valtos ship + additional cargo upgrades for when you find a very sweet surplus or shortage situation.
A fast ship with lots of additional guns/torps and a predator tracking array for when you get a Kill/Capture contract
A low-profile ship for when you have a delivery contract (to avoid detection)
etc.

It does suck some when the ship you need is hundreds of AU away though. ;D Just wondering why I can't become a Fleet Commander and have 20 Captains working under me.

You can have 20 spare ships in dry dock - 5 for each quarter of the map After a while you end up with more money than you'd ever need so having so many ships is a way to chew up the spare cash in case of a Central Bank collapse. And no ... there won't be any chance of a Central Bank collapse - don't panic, your money is good and safe ... for now.

Y'know, IRL, dry-docking costs a LOT of money/day and ship-owners would rather anchor them somewhere in the Carribeans than putting them in dry-dock. Imagine parking your car in the most expensive parking lot in NY city and multiply it by ten thousand fold. That's what it'll cost.
Wondering why we ain't charged that kinda amount for tethering our ships in the Star Docks...
Also, seeing as I've been a major a-hole, I could only muster having a few Indie planets willing to house my ships. Not cool, that. If only I could subjugate these other planets under the tyranny wise and just ruling of the Cadar Syndicate...

Sure you can.
You just have to leave the one you're driving to float in space and captain the captured one back into the nearest port.
Then BUY a new ship so you could dock the captured ship you came in with.

Yeah, the upgrade limitation thing confused me at the beginning too. You will notice that there are 5 TYPES of upgrades STRUCTURAL COMBAT INTERIOR PROPULSION ARMAMENT I've noticed some places don't have all the types and thus I have to go to say, De Valtos (ugh) or some other faction world to open up the appropriate type list and even then they might not have the upgrade I want in the type. Heh One thing I found out that was very useful. Inside STRUCTURAL Upgrade: There is a nice 20 percent cargo hold space increase upgrade. Well, guess what, it STACKS if you use it properly. So get other cargo increase upgrades, like oh say Cargo Pod, Cargo Prow (these are just examples you choose what you want) and THEN choose the 20 percent cargo hold. Nice bump of cargo space right there. Also, Water Fuel tanks upgrade is epic. That's 25 space for fuel that doesn't interfere with your cargo hold (like adding 25 points of cargo space in 1 shot).

Also, the more cargo you carry, the larger your "signature" ... ie, the more obvious you are to enemy ships. Carrying 25 units of water if your hold can only carry 30 normally means you are getting pretty obvious (before taking into account Stealth, etc).
If you have a W-F Tank, you'll notice that when you carry 25 units of water, your hold reads "0". IE, no cargo impact to your ships signature.
It's an important distinction that may help you when you are traversing enemy territory.

oh right. very interesting. thanks slayer. wouldn't have figured that out.
wonder if Cory will add option to remove bits of kit from ship at some point? or does that go against the idea of it?
all the new kit is in collapsed list again for my latest ship, so can't add the water tank :-( :-D
cheers dan
