For what it is worth, I turned it off for aesthetic reasons. The art bugged me. It clashed with the rest of the art in the drawings of the region. Now that the buttons have this odd purple blue shading, the blue shading in the dpad doesn't look so bad. If there are any of you out there that turned it off for the same reason, give it another shot. It sure makes navigating easier. Though I would still love a 'always hide the dpad -- keep the functionality but lose (not loose :-) ) the artwork' option.

the dpad is an interim solution.
i'm learning as i go with a lot of this stuff. it's stable, works on all phones, etc.
i want it to be orange instead of the color it is today. i keep after andrew =)

orange?
You sure that you didn't overdo it with the candied yams, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie?
(At least that is the rumour we have that all Americans eat this for Thanksgiving, which must have just happened. And it is probably not true that all Americans have this as the eating tradition. California, where I believe you are from, seems eclectic on principle :-) so I am really out on the proverbial limb here.) :-)

Not that it matters to me, but for some reason parameters toggled or not, there are no movement buttons shown. I only have the music muted (kids usually steal my headphones) and the accelerator on (high end phone).
Motorola DROID 3 OS: 2.3.4. no other boosting on or off. I typically use my hardqwerty as I do have actual cardinal point arrow keys.
sorry for posting in the wrong area too.

'I do have actual cardinal point arrow keys' ah, that is what I have, AND I thought that was what the d-pad is. Am I supposed to be seeing something else??? still very confused here. Can we show pictures? How do I get a screenshot of my phone, and show you all what I am seeing, and was, up until now,. rather sure the rest of you were as well? Grävling, perplexed

there is the one screen dpad. that is little blue arrows that are accused of being ugly.
then there is a physical dpad, as included on phones (that I use) ad the Moto Droid and EVO Shift by HTC. This keypad's support has remain consistent while we have worked to enhance the "touch only" interface using on screen dpads.
The request to disable the touch base dpad was loudest from players already using a hardware dpad.

@cory. Sorry for my info being a little skewed. ok, yes I typically use the hardqwerty on my phone. What I am saying is that since 5.1 I don't even see the on screen dpad any longer. I didn't turn it off. Most phones wont have hard keyboards. they are going away. usb/Bluetooth keyboards will help tablet users more.
Yes I am lucky to have the hard keys, but I wont always have this phone.
Edit: shortly after this post I opened the game again. went into options, disabled the on screen dpad and then went back, let one round run went back to options and toggled it back.
Now they are there again.
