Gravling pretty much summed it up, but having a general trouble shooting guide would be very helpful for a new player.

As for missions, I'd suggest just kind of what fallen and you have said on these forums, maybe a simple "try to avoid taking long distance missions until you've leveled a bit and have some financial security" kind of thing would go a long way to absolving you of a player's death.

The mission system is assigning missions it thinks are close enough, but it sounds like we need to scale it back a bit!

Keep getting first mission offers from Politician contact that are 2+ jumps away from start.
On other hand had one game where a Merchant contact gave me 3 or 4 missions in a row to planet that was literally right next to my start location planet.
