OK, so as far as I can tell, in combat the red dots under the weapon determine the ranges it can fire at. At range 3, attempting to fire a torp displays the following message: INVALID RANGE Can only be fired between range 1 and 6 This doesn't seem correct. Likewise, my valiant autocannon (before it blew up ) displayed text inferring that it could fire between ranges of 0 and 5.

bookworm21 - sounds like the text display has bugs. Trust the dots. The pink dot indicates best range. #ST2-3323

Do you think it would be clearer for the optimal range to be a stronger rather than paler colour? Just wondering

Those dots are clearly not final artwork, so we may change the colors as we approach that stage. Have taken notes about switching them.

Good to have more votes on it

Check with colour blind people about this before final. I know we have a few in general in the community, are they in the alpha do we know?

We've tried to be cognizant of the color blind issue during development. Definitely been careful of red/green being the only indicator of issues (see icon use in character creation, etc) -- but we'd love to hear from those folks that can comment directly!

I have blue/green problems, but not severe ones. I just think that 'cyan' and all its close friends are some sort of green. I am pretty rotten at detecting Indigo sorts of deep blue violets, too. But this problem is a lot rarer than either of the red/green sorts, one of which is a whole lot more common than the other sort.

Well, please let us know if there are places where the color / icon set is confusing to you!

Chalk one more vote up for stronger color = better performance. If you want to skirt the color issue all together, maybe consider shapes? E.g. circle = optimal, triangle = possible, X = impossible?

I wrote a game which did this nicely in the days before bitmapped colour screens, sometime in the early 1980s at uni. (so on my tektronix vector terminal, everything was green, but others on campus had all white and all orange). You wandered around corridors shooting xenos. Killing them required being "the goldilocks" distance away from the enemy: E.g. circle = too close for a good shot, but has been done, hexagon == optimal, pentagon == ok, square == unlikely but has been done, triangle == don't waste your ammo, you are too far away. Relating the number of sides to the chance of accuracy worked out rather well. Just a thought.
