When selecting a ship, at the start, I am interested in seeing things like: cargo space, fuel efficiency, how fast can she run, and how many guns can I put on her. Right now it is hard to see at startup why you would want a Paladin Cruiser rather than a Frontier Liner. They cost the same, both have the same mass (5000) and 20 crew. Fuel 115 vs 120, but what does that mean?

Very true points. I get what you're saying, we need to come up with a good visual way to represent ships.
We'll need to reuse this rating system on many different screens as well, so definitely worth putting time into.

We'll need to reuse this rating system on many different screens as well, so definitely worth putting time into. Well, one thing I would like -- this has more to do with ship designing and customising, but works here as well, is if the game AI gave a report on your ship when you were finished, so you can get some sort of report on a ship's offensive and defensive capabilities. i.e. "With a speed of 19,000 this ship can easily outrun or overtake most other vessels in the quadrant" / "With shielding of 200, this ship is very fragile" / "With the ability to mount 4 torpedoes this ship is much better offensively than other craft of similar size, while like all scout craft severely outgunned by most other craft in the quadrant". One problem with ST1 is it is hard to tell when you have overpurchased on something, like Hull, except by purchasing less and less and then waiting until you get killed a lot. Then it is 'aha, a little more of this, then'. I, for one, would have really enjoyed some feedback before I went out and got myself killed again.

Actually, that is a decent idea. I'm not sure if it's possible to have a real-time critique of your ship, but maybe just having a little blurb as part of the description saying "this ship is faster/more durable/better armed/etc. than most other ships" or giving you a general feel for the ship would be nice.

Since the AI will be generating your adversaries, it ought to know how this ship stacks up compared to the other ones out there.

In terms of descriptions for starting ships, I think it is only important to compare them to the other starting ships.
How does this ship stack up against the other options you have available.
In terms of real time comparison, I think that is a very appropriate feature for the combat preamble or ship browsing screen when you are shopping.
How does our current ship stack up against the ship I'm facing or considering buying. In ST1, it was as simple as putting all the numbers side by side and letting the player figure it out.
We're going to go way beyond that for ST2.
