Could someone explain the doohickeys hanging off the planets in map view? Seems like they are green or white. Some at 12 o'clock others at 4.
Any other information about the meaning of map features would be appreciated.

Green are Wilderness zones, The white Target ones are current missions, and I'm not 100% sure about the others...

The thing that looks a bit like a person-ish means you have a contact there.
If there is a small blue dot on the doohickey close in to the planet that means there is fuel available

As others have said --
Circle with Head in it -- Contact Circle with circles in side (target) -- Missions
These use the same iconography you can see in the tan hexes down the side of the screen.
Green Circle with Mountains - Wild Zone White-blue Circle with city Towers - Urban Zone White-blue Circle with city Towers with blue dot added to the arrow - Urban Zone w/ Refueling

Thanks y'all.
Funny thing is i didn't even realize there were heads, cities, mountains and blue dots. I tend to play zoomed out on my small screen so I can see all the planets. At that resolution, the icons in the doohickeys are completely obscured.
Pro-tip for small screen players, zoom-in to look at doohickeys. :-)
