It'd be helpful if people would post a word or two about the first ship upgrade they get and how that fits with their overall game strategy.
Right now, I'm playing a Military Officer who is mostly trading and running delivery missions. I'd love expand cargo capacity.

I find that upgrading cargo capacity generally not worth it, as I haven't found any 'small' or 'medium' sized cargo holds yet. This means I need to pay a huge fee (~40k)to upgrade to 5 more space, and I don't find that worthwhile.
I like the Torping captain, so generally strip out an autocannon and replace with another torpedo.
Also mass dampers are usually the first to go on my ships - usually for a scanner or something.

tenbsmith - did you install a larger cargo hold? Great thread!

Reduce the mass of the ship + parts. They can also cause chain reactions if damaged iirc. Essentially they have a mass value of -150.
I find the ships I use generally have enough spare mass to allow me to do the upgrades I want, at least at first.

I haven't done any upgrades yet. I'm hoping to take advantage of collective wisdom before I make an investment. Given the high cost of marginal improvements in cargo capacity, I'm heading in a different direction. I might increase the number of officers/crew I can house OR improve my ability to escape from combat.
I hope people will continue to post brief descriptions of upgrades they like. It could be fun and informative.

The torpedo fighters of ST4X disagree The torp may be highly used by the Cadarian military, but only the engineering prowess of the Alta Mesan shipwrights have mastered the torp enough to fit it to fighter class starships P)

Does mass reduction lessen your chance of ship contacts? Do you use less fuel? Not sure I understand the significance.

@earthsuit - each ship has a Max Mass. Every component requires some Mass to add to the ship. You might hit a point where you can't install a component you want because you are "over Mass".
Mass Dampeners reduce the total Mass of all of your installed Components.

Mass as far as I can tell is just a limit for how much stuff can fit on a ship.
You should be able to see the mass limit for the ship in the status screen
EDIT: beat me too it :0

bookworm21, I think I see. Reduse the apparent mass used by the ships components so that you can stuff with more stuff. Kinda like loosening your belt at Thanksgiving. 😁

I generally ADD Mass dampners as first step of any planned upgrades so when installing say new "better" weapons that have more mass on my Guardian Interceptor I have the mass available. Something else I've taken to doing is adding a barracks 2 and then replacing the barracks 5 on my Guardian Interceptor. Gives me a little extra free mass to play with and lets me not only have 30 crew instead of 28 (meaning more bunk space for mission specialists like diplomats or extra combat specialists for patrol.) but also be able to see what crew types are available in a spice hall for recruiting even with max crew since my theoretical bunk space is higher than life support max. Last is useful for deciding who I can fire when hitting a planet and wanting to engage my Merchant officers special ability to possibly find me new contacts.

Installing an engine that can push more mass, or reducing the load on your ship, can improve fuel economy and agility in combat.

There are Engines and Drives labled "E" which stands for efficient, if you're looking for cheaper travel.
But the big discounts don't kick in until the next update with all these bug fixes for fuel use.
