I was flying through the pigdust nebula when combat with a "Xeno Xeno" was initiated without a preamble. It went straight to the ship combat screen.

Correct. Some combats will not feature pre-ambles.

If the enemy hostility is such that there is no option but to fight, the Preamble is skipped.

Maybe a really _short_ preamble saying AMBUSH!!! Yeah ... I suppose if there was something valuable on the screen. I can hear the comments now about putting in a screen that requires a click thru with no options. I think that would lose in the competition with comments about 'is my game working right? I just dropped into combat when I expected a preamble screen?'  Besides, it is not as if you have nothing to do. Alien-avoiders need time to get a really good curse out (and take a look at their ship, to see just how damaged we are right now, anyway) while Alien-hunters want to start cheering. |

Yes, if the point here is to pander to Cory Trese's sadistic tendencies, there is a lot we could do graphically and sound-wise with that ambush screen. |
