But yes, definitely, ST2 is a different game. The setting is different. Hyperwarp has changed some things.
The Star Trader's charter is still recognized, but their are limits to that trust.
In the game of ST2, all players will face a greater degree of challenge developing strong relationships with all the Factions simultaneously.
It is darned hard to get trade permits with multiple Factions [if you don't build for it.] When you start off as De Valtos, you probably won't very many Cadar friends [unless you specifically work for it.] In fact, supporting Cadar friends enough to get Trade Permits may actually hurt your De Valtos friends, reputation, the Contact's influence and so on.
ST1 does a lot to discourage this "all Factions are friendly!" result with Trade Permits, Bans, Max Fun Rank rules, etc. ST2 really makes it part of the setting. Compared to ST1, in ST2, the expert player focuses more on their one or two Factions and builds a more meaningful relationships with them.
We've traded the ubiquitous Faction Palace for personalized, AI-driven, procedurally generated, game unique, dynamic characters who represent their allegiances relative to your character and who's actions will have real impacts on the game universe in which your character plays.
It was a trade we knew we should make, for the good of ST2.
