Right now the icons on the map that indicate where a city, wilderness or refusing station are useful. But right now there's no way to know if that particular city is an industrial, population, Farming, mining, etc.
I don't know if the PC pop-ups have that information, but on mobile since there is no pop-up right now, it's impossible to tell/remember what each city is, unless you move to it.
