I hit a xeno card during exploring and had to assign some troops. I only had three soldiers to put out (because I couldn't assign my pistoleer officer, see other bug report) and started combat with three soldiers. The game filled out my troops automatically (is this a feature?) with my Captain! He died. He was going strong on Impossible, too So, two (possible) bug reports: 1) Game auto-fills random crew into empty slots in troop combat 2) If 1 is not a bug, game should most definitely not be sticking your captain in when there are other choices.

deepest condolences. poor you. Did you have any of your non-soldier sorts assigned to 'On Patrol'? I think that On Patrol sorts get picked ahead of On Station sorts.

johndramey - very sorry to hear it. From the rules explanation thread (http://startradersrpg.proboards.com/thread/14606/st2-rules-explanation-thread?page=1) f the ship is attacked in boarding combat, you are able to select crew to enter the combat who are actively On Patrol. If you are unable to fill all 4 slots with On Patrol crew members, then the remaining slots are filled by random On Station crew members. If you attack an enemy ship in board, you may only pick crew members who are On Patrol to board the enemy ship. Since it was ground combat, it is going to randomly fill the spots. But, you could have picked someone else to go in. You have to take 4 if you can. Explorer does not allow you to shield crew by simply not taking them. Your risk for rolling the dice is that 4 crew will be forced into a crew combat. However, the game should make that clear to you. #3424 to improve that experience.

How do I make sure that I 'lead from the rear'? My crew is expendible. I am not.

That being said, I'd say that having totally random crew being assigned during boarding combat makes sense in the fact that the player could be caught off guard, but having totally random crew being assigned during exploration is a little wonky. Would it be possible to have a crew->officer->captain priority for player-initiated combat? I mean, if my captain is boarding/exploring, I don't really see him/her randomly assigning critical crew when there are redshirts around.

johndramey - the thing being, for ground combat, you can assign everyone manually. Just click On Patrol / On Station toggle, and keep picking until you get all 4. I agree the interface is not finished in any way, but if you don't pick then we are going to go randomly. If we put your Captain as top priority, we might be sending a Merchant to his death.

I... honestly didn't know I could toggle to on station personnel. Now I look like a goof!
I actually meant that priority should start with crew, then move to officers, and that your captain should be the last person sent into combat. But, know that I know you can assign on-station personnel, the point is moot. Thanks for clearing this up, consider the non-existent bug closed.

johndramey - to clarify, in the case of on-ground combat (Explorer, Missions) you can. If you are boarded, you can't. You're surprised and your crew who are working the ship are sucked into a whirling, running battle.
