Crew damage

Officer Genious ship combat hasn't been working too well for me just now because I either escape or sink their boat and get salvage money.  One day though they are going to surrender and I am going to pillage their boat, replace my crew losses by conscripting their surviving crew (instead of recruiting level 1 crew from a faction planet to replace losses I am conscripting cantankerous enemy crew who will likely be at a much higher level but cause many more social problems!) and sell whats left to a breakers yard. Vindictive? No, but I will smile when this finally happens!

But the enemy will be crushing your low-level crew...

If your crew is composed of level 3 crew members ... and based on the turn of the game, their crew is composed of level 3 and 2 members ... and some of your level 3 folks die, then you could conscript some of their level 2 or 3 crew. Instead, you could go to the spice hall and recruit level 1 folks. Either way!
