can somebody break down what skills do what in combat? what are the primary and secondary factors influencing evasion from guns and tops? does 'evasion' help for ship ops evasion or only boarding? What does agility and speed do and how important is it compared to other skills? Any skills/attributes increasing accuracy of gun and Torp besides gunnery? What prevents successful enemy board and does it relate to ship evasion factors?
I love the new combat system by the way. 😀 It's much more tactical, with more options and more combinations. I also feel that evasion is harder than ST, which makes it more fun. I just wish I knew what skills did what.

@starfixer - killer question. Ok ... we need to add these facts to the Rules thread right away.
Glad you are liking it! I definitely enjoy the 3-part turn for ship combat, it definitely gives you the ability to have some great combination plays that feel amazing.

And something else: Does repair skill repair ship in combat?

Looks like the first thing we're going to get to do is take a detailed look at combat.

I actually just started playing around with a military officer on demanding and have been having pretty good success in combat. My main strategy? Pop Evasive Maneuvers first round, then just whale away on the enemy with torpedoes. I replaced my 1-2 range autocannons with more torpedoes, so now I can fire 4 a round! I'm really liking the looks of those missile systems. Since you are talking about taking a detailed look at combat, what exactly would you like us to look into at this phase of the Alpha, Cory Trese? Or should we avoid going to far into it until we are at a later phase?

johndramey - this phase of the alpha is about Trading, Ship Combat, Crew Combat, Missions.

Well then, I'll say that so far, for me:
1) Combat has been a lot more forgiving. In ST, it seemed like you had a pretty terrible chance of escaping from early game combat. In ST2, I can easily run away from combat as long as I'm willing to accept a little bit of ship damage.
2) Combat is a lot more strategic. In ST, I usually found myself charging up to close range and hammering away at the enemy's engines. In ST2, I've already made a total torp boat that sits at extreme range and just hammers the enemy and a long range boat that mixes rail guns (oh so sexy) with a torp now and then to totally wreck enemies.
What I'd like to see is a little more feedback on what is going on under the hood, so to speak. I know we are still early times and all, but if I could see why I/the enemy missed (maybe just show a roll result or what was failed?) and when an effect procs (maybe just a simple pop up of red text saying "Fire!" or "Aftershocks!") it would be pretty cool.
I'd especially like to see range changing results. Right now, I know that having my ship pop sharp steering and retreat has a very good chance of getting me out of combat (in fact, it hasn't failed yet!), but I don't know why. What do the bonuses do?

johndramey - are you using the Log button? Such a heavily requested feature in our other games, we were determined to get it in from the start.

In both combat screens there is a button that just says "LOG"
It opens the combat log showing all the roll data.
