Damaged while Exploring (not enough damage?)

I went on an exploring mission. I drew a red -5 card (and, reminder, red and green are the worst colour choices for bad vs good if you want to have colour blind users. Of course the skulls all over the bad cards make them hard to miss, even if you are colourblind.) At any rate, I got told that my ship had taken moderate damage. No great crew saving throws for me, either.

Went to the stardocks. Didn't even cost me 1000! I get damaged far worse than that just travelling around minding my own business.
Are my engineers busy beavering away repairing as I try to find a stardock owned by a faction that doesn't want my head on a stick, or were the reports of moderate damage exaggerated?
