I had a thought.
I think that the death of a crew member should be made more important, somehow. Here is my idea along those lines. When a crewmember dies, asuming you can recover the body and it hasn't been eaten by Space Kraken, or something, you should have a choice. You can detour to a planet owned by the faction of the dead crewmember and give them a decent burial there. (Or blast them into the sun? depends on what burial traditions the ST worlds have.) With a rousing speech about how excellent they were. This improves morale. Not as much as not getting your crew killed in the first place, but it does lots of good along those lines. But it takes time.
Or you can just space them. Morale does not improve. May get worse.
Or you can decide to give them a burial but take your time about it. Maybe you like keeping your schedule better. Maybe you lost crew from many different factions, and just getting to all the burial sites takes time. Maybe you need to bury some members from a faction that wants your head on a stick and finding something that is weak enough that you can just sneak in and bury them is hard. Maybe you tried to do that and got a huge diplomatic incident that took time to resolve. At any rate, delays in buring adversely effect morale.
Not as bad as 'give everybody except Faction X members a good burial. Just space those sub-humans, though'. At least among Faction X crew.

Interesting idea, but sounds like a lot of work for the player to manage the death of crew members individually.
I think, at this time, we're going to focus more on the event of survival -- the Trait mutations from nearly dying but rolling your Death Chance and coming out the other side alive.

This from the person who thinks it is too much trouble to personally council his crew members concerning which talents they should train to make a maximum impact on the efficient operation of his ship. NOW !!! he wants to go gallivanting all over the galaxy shoving meat in the ground and saying insincere words over the it. But, hey. It might be fun.

You know, I was going to put in a preamble, about in an effort to have a more sincere and personal relationship with my crew, and to address issues of capitalist exploitation raised by certain other captains, but I thought, no, don't push it....
