I see every so often when spicing the crew that my Captain has made a Charisma check and spotted a trait with one of the crew. What determines the frequency of such checks and the outcome? Any way besides the various talents to help the Captain make and succeed with those checks more often? Guessing high Charisma for Captain helps, is that opposed by the officer/crew members Charisma? Does an officer/crew member having a higher or lower Charisma make it easier to spot traits?
Last Captain was at like turn 9000 and still had many crew members with some or all of their 3 traits hidden. Would be nice to try expediting the Captains ability to spot such faster so really undesirable traits or potential problem traits can be dealt with sooner rather than later. Finding out your favorite officer or best E-Tech is a brute when they're already level 10+ is painful to say the least.

My Spy captains are a lot better at this than my Mechant captains despite having poorer charisma than my Merchant captains, indeed a lot better at this than anybody, even with lowest stat in charisma. Next time I make a not-Spy captain he or she is going to get an Officer with the Spy job, straight-away.

All my Captains are Spy's Also give the Commander as a job and take the talent to spot a trait on hire, unfortunately until new system is in place that is only semi useful as it has a 30 turn cool down and if the first one person you hire has bad stats/traits oh well either hire blindly as far as traits or wait out the cool down and do without your desired crew.

I just made a Military Officer and stuck extra points in charisma -- having skills as choice A has been an eye-opener, not sure I will always want to play that way but makes it a lot easier to learn what a whole lot of skill X gets you -- and got to see lots of crew traits. So maybe it is charisma based, and my Merchants, who date from when I was one weeks' worth more ignorant about this game, just didn't have enough.

Regardless of Job or Talents, Charisma is used at different times (Recruit, Spice, etc) to grant a % chance of spotting traits.

But do some jobs do it better, or is it just a matter of charisma?

At the moment, Job has no influence.
Captain Charisma only.
