So went to make a merchant and decided to switch things up even more by running a different ship from my beloved Guardian Interceptor.
Was surprised to find that the Larger Mass Cautela Heavylift actually has much less Cargo capacity with little room to upgrade it. This seems odd and very missleading/counterintuitive. The Guardian Interceptor is supposed to be a tough mainstay of most faction/zone defense fleets, well armed and as a cruiser capable of extended independent action and a favorite as a Command ship which explains the Cargo area and Luxery Passenger Cabin.
The Cautela Heavylift is supposed to be a favorite merchant ship yet has virtually identical weapons loadout to the Dragoon Cruiser and only a single Large space dedicated to Cargo with no room to add a second. Your getting 20 less Cargo Capacity at start, a slower less manueverable ship which means it will be harder to avoid/escape pirates and the like and the extra weapons are questionable in how much they will improve your combat capabilities given the limits impossed by RP. Only possible advantage it might have is that it's hugely overcrewed even at a low level start so you can have a very large complement of fighting types if you want. However all those extra bodies will be demanding Pay/Spice and needing Doctors etc.
For a new player looking to have a Merchant/Explorer/whatever type captain that is more interested in hauling goods about than getting into fights there needs to be an actual Merchant type ship available. The Dragoon Cruiser covers the more agressive playstyles well for that priority range but the Cautela Heavylift is a disappointment.

So you don't like that ship? Do you see how it is useful for different play styles, or you just cannot get into it?
We can re-design it but I'd be curious to hear from the people using it -- popular ship so something must be going right for it.

We can re-design it but I'd be curious to hear from the people using it -- popular ship so something must be going right for it. From a quick scan of what's installed it and Dragoon Cruiser are nearly identical in configuration with difference being starting with a Luxery Cabin or Starting with a Medical Bay. Think any ship your trying to sell to new players as a mainstay of Merchants/Cargo shippers across the Galaxy needs to at least match the cargo capacity you can find with all the ships in the 2 lower Priorities if not exceed them because of the premium priority choice required and larger hull size. Of course that's just my personal opinion though I wonder if some of it's popularity might be a result of people not noticing they could get a lot more cargo space with the "smaller" ships. By the way, and this again my personal opinion, but have checked out the alternatives for each starting ship priority from C-A and think that all to a greater or lesser degree have a bit of a problem differentiating one choice from the other at each priority. Think with a little bit of adjustment you could make the choices a bit more meaningful, ship X is better for Captains looking to get into combat earlier but is more limited as a cargo/exploration type vessel. Ship Y is for the would be Merchant princes and Explorers planning to carry large amounts of goods and try avoiding combat.

I have nothing against the ship, but if I wanted to be a merchant with a big cargo hold I would want something else. However, I think that the time to discuss 'what starting ships should we have for the release' is after we have had plenty of experience with the ship designer and can post our favourite builds, and why.

What could happen right now is a mass data dump for all ships, similar to those two, because that would be awesome and checking what each has would be easier than starting a new captain each time.

Sorry you missed the thread. Here is a link: startradersrpg.proboards.com/thread/14609/st2-ship-details-v1-25I've been updating this every release. Thanks!

That's pretty awesome, even more so that the game regurgitated it by its own.
Have you thought about sticking that thread?

I just sticky'd it.
The problem with editing the post when you make a release is that proboards doesn't mark that as having new content, so we weren't aware there was goodness there we needed to read. Now we can at least find the thread better.
