my current Captain has relocated all officer cabins on his Paladin Cruiser to the 1st deck along with the Crew quarters, Luxery Passenger Cabin and Medical Bay. Ship starts with a couple of the officer cabins located on deck 2. Pardon my ignorance. What benefit does this have? Is Deck 1 better protected than Deck 2?

Ah. Hadn't thought of that. Thanks. Also you can have more officer cabins than your ship can actually handle which is usefull if you decide you want to change location on the ship. Example my current Captain has relocated all officer cabins on his Paladin Cruiser to the 1st deck along with the Crew quarters, Luxery Passenger Cabin and Medical Bay. Ship starts with a couple of the officer cabins located on deck 2. Why? (serious question, not indication that I think you are nuts.) (after I hear why, I may then conclude you are nuts, but so it goes ... )

Because I'm nuts Honestly it probably wound up costing me officers since any damage to deck 1 is more likely to damage an officers cabin. That said I did it because in my mind on a ship you have the Crew/Passenger accommodations all on one deck and place most of the engines/guns whatever on another deck as opposed to scattering them about willy nilly throught the ship. In otherwords it was just my own personal preferences and not for any game mechanics reason, like I said I'm crazy.

In that case, I agree, you are crazy.

In that case, I agree, you are crazy. But as a very good friend of mine, one of the other founders of our company, who was there for the entire heroic 'let us root Grävling's tablet' experience of yesterday, (and who also owns a Nvidia Shield K1 which he rooted on Saturday, the easy way, as in as soon as he bought it so he didn't have any files in there he wanted saving before the great -- lose everything when you unlock the bootloader experience) has used as his .signature file for decades ... 'Well, of course I'm crazy. But that doesn't mean I'm _wrong_.'
