The Trader talent (big sale something?) is really effective at getting more Contacts once you have a Level 2 trade permit. I didn't notice at first, but after a few substantial trades, I found about 8 extra Contacts on my list within ~3 months. That's awesome. I'm glad we were able to get that into the latest build. Happy to hear it is working for you! Those 8 extra Contacts almost certainly have additional Contact Links and more introductions to offer. If you're on a 20 Quadrant map, there are probably close to 300 active Contacts at any given time.

athios - we're working on some better update routine to make it clear. Right now it only shows up in the backgrounded event list.

Yeah, it was a very pleasant surprise! I probably have about 40 Contacts within 2 degrees of separation right now.
Funnily enough this is a Spy captain, and I'm not that great at Spying yet. I think the most records I've had so far is 15 (a big difference compared to in STRPG!)

Are they all merchant contacts? 17 Contacts, 80% home faction. Each Contact usually has 2-8 links. 3 Intelligence Officer 4 Politician 2 Archivist 2 Ex-Mercenary 3 Starpoint Mechanic 1 Spice Trader 2 Military Commander Turn 2700 was the last date on my log.

I think I have a diplomat, I can get him some merchant levels. Or I'll start a new character. I'll look around.

Are Contacts obtained via Introduction or the Big Trade talent supposed to have pre-existing notions about who you are? I am not sure which part of this is bugged, but - The new contacts show up on my Known Contacts list as Rep 0, which is what I expect since I've never physically met them before.
- When I pay them a visit though, my actual rep with them is not zero. Don't remember the exact numbers for each person, but Rep 46 Influence 17 seems to pop up very often for contacts I'm meeting for the first time.

A certain part of your faction Rep will show as influence with contacts of that faction. Means if you've developed fairly good rep with a given faction contacts from that faction will offer you more even at first meeting than if you had no rep or negative rep with their faction.

Wondering if the role of a merchant contact will eventually be expanded. I can't think of what special gear he may confer, he doesn't give missions, and he offers trade permits that I can get from more useful contacts. Right now, it seems a pointless creature to even consider as a starter.

How did you sell permit 2 goods when so many faction planets have a high security rating? Unless you have pre-scouted a good place to unload, you will have to do a fair bit of cruising around while doing missions and trading some Legal 8-10 goods to stay afloat. For me, typically it's 75-90% cargo full of illegal goods, cruise, low on funds, cruise, bankrupt, cruise, in debt, cruise, jackpot! Instant 20-30k cred surplus. That's one of the benefits of having 20 quadrants. Don't find what you need? Keep moving... P.S. I love New Taipei City. Wondering if the role of a merchant contact will eventually be expanded. I can't think of what special gear he may confer, he doesn't give missions, and he offers trade permits that I can get from more useful contacts. Right now, it seems a pointless creature to even consider as a starter. Not really a priority right now. Will be more contact types and functions later, I assume.

I still remember that planet where they had an A- demand for whatever illegal good I had on board. $13,000 listed profit - did not have a trade permit with that faction. I was silently screaming...

Cache nearby and hope demand doesn't drop while you try and find a suitable contact?

Ohhh, caching! Having never used them before in STRPG, I didn't really think of this. This could work, provided I have the mental capacity to remember where I need to sell at, and the cache doesn't get raided.
