Since I do a lot of tinkering with upgrades on ships and can get a bit obsessive with placement of stuff on the ship had an idea. Instead of current situation where you get a list of all components currently installed on your ship with no indication where they are at etc. Instead have the UI give you choice of deck and then just like off the status screen you see the actual deck plan. For potential upgrades/refits you would then simply click on one of the components on the deck plan which would only then give you the listing of potential upgrades that fit that size slot.

xdesperado: the current way to handle ships is clearly filed under 'not Even Cory Trese likes it as an interface'. I have no idea what fallen has planned for us, but this is not it.

Absolutely on the list to be upgrade!
The visual of the ship decks that is seen in status (and currently not very useful) will hopefully be a central part of that plan.

Like many people I suspect, I tend to be visually oriented. Knowing size and what something is, while useful and necessary information doesn't always help me determine what I want to install/change and where it's located. Being able to view that deck plan and go oh! that's a small compartment what's in it now and what might I put there would make it much smoother at least for me. Just my random thought for day and sounds like your already planning on going in this sort of direction eventually anyways.

Since we are on this topic, if there is no strategic value to cherry-pick placing specific components in specific areas of the ship (e.g. Deck 1 vs 2; fore vs aft; centre vs edge), then I'd like to request ability to just sort the list alphabetically, or possibly by utility (weapons, propulsion, accomodations, etc).

Actually from what Cory Trese has said there is a reason to "cherry-pick" locations of components. He's stated that placing all your guns for example in the front of your ship may make them more vulnerable to attacks hitting front of ship, placing all cabins on one deck likewise makes them more vulnerable to attacks landing on that deck etc. Not sure how the actual mechanics work especially with no way to target specific areas or components currently but pretty sure in future choosing location of stuff will play a much more important role, especially when we get to the point of being able to design our own ships.

Thanks for the feedback. We could have turned off that developer-only screen, but we left it in.
I think Phase 1 Alpha is better with the UI. I know it is hard to have something where feedback cannot be given, but it provides the purpose it provides.
If the UI is too rough, just skip it. When we put the actual UI in, it will make more sense.

Cory Trese, thanks for the info! No worries, I understand things aren't "as they are meant to be" during the Alpha, that's not an issue at all. It's just that sometimes I (and others) get a little confused when we're not exactly sure what "the purpose" for something is, hence these little discussions here and there.

Just my random thought for day and sounds like your already planning on going in this sort of direction eventually anyways. Yes, we'd really like to make the visual deck design the primary UI. There will always need to be a secondary list UI.
