Barracks upgrades are expensive so I wanted to ask before I fork over the cash.
1.) If I have the mass does it matter what size the ship is? I'm flying a Juror Class: 16 Crew, 4 Officers. If I upgrade to a Barracks(3) that has space for 20 crew. Does that mean I can recruit another 4 crew members?
2.)If that is true could I buy another officer quarters and promote one from the crew?
3.) Juror class has life support(24). Does that mean if I get a Barracks(3) it comes with its own life support for 4 more crew? Does life support get increased to 28?
4.) Or because I have 16 crew and 4 officers now, I still have 4 more points of life support to upgrade to Barracks(3)
5.) Does a passenger currently use life support points?

Officer and passenger cabins provide the life support for your officers and passengers. Max number of officers for hull size tells you how many officer cabins you can have. Max life support refers strictly to the crew and is also set by hull size. If max life support is listed as 24 then you can use up to a barracks 4 orhave two barracks 1 if you preferred and the ship would handle the life support. Note you could install a barracks 5 or some combination of the other barracks which would say you had room for more crew but you'd still be limited by max life support.

You seem to have a real grip on this, and I have a couple followup questions, (got to rule out the effects of all those concussions lol.. but there is some truth there) 1.) If the ship says 4 officers under no circumstances may I have any more than 4 officers. If I purchase another officer's quarters, and then promote an officer from one of the new crew I added with a barracks upgrade, it will not work right? 2.) The next thing you are trying to explain: I just have to come up with any match of barracks that adds up to a total of 24 crew as long as I have the mass? I have 16 crew living in Barracks(2). The Juror Class has life support for 24. (24 - 16 = 8) So I can upgrade the barracks as you explained, and then hire 8 more crew? Did I get it right?

Look here: That is a Frontier Liner -- sorry, that is hard to read under the photoediting junk. Right now I have 4/4 officers. I have 4 officer cabins, and they are all occupied. One of them is called the Bridge. I sleep there, so I am included in that 4 officer count. Max Officers is 5. So if I wanted to, I could install one more officer's cabin and hire another officer. I could not do that twice.

The descriptive text when you take the Juror about "has 16 crew" is basically just telling you the size of the barracks that is pre-installed. It is not an intrinsic limit on the ship's crew. It starts wit a 16 Crew Barracks. Replace it with a 24 Crew Barracks and you can now have a total of 24 crew on board. Hope that helps clear it up!

Combined with a mass dampener, because you have the crew to support it, their can be tremendous flexibility even in the smaller ships.

Just like a ship has a max officer count, it has a max life support count. You can't cram more than a certain number of bodies into a ship (Juror classes is 24). Specifically, its Max Officers x 6 for any and all ships. You can see this value on the status page, bottom right. Sorry!

Us kids are always trying to figure out how to get more candy. Related Important Question: If I get a bigger mass dampener, or add a second one. Is there some where I can find the remaining total mass I have available to use? If it's there I don't see it. I would really like to know how much space is left in my ship when shopping for components. Maybe a good location would be in the Starport upgrades screen. Some number that displays your current total free space? I've totally blown it with several recent posts so if the, free space mass indicator, is visible somewhere please let me know where to look.

Yes, that will be a really important stat during component shopping. It isn't visible on that screen, but you can see the X/Y in the top left of status (3350 / 3500 Mass).

I concur with John Robinson! Would be great to have that value on a header bar on the Component Upgrades screen when you are working out the next UI updates.
