I'd like the option to start with just crew, and decide which ones to promote to officers, instead of having some already selected for me.

Agreed, while I very well may want a Navigator and either a Pilot or Gunner as 2 of my officers the ones selected may not be the best choice as officers based on Attributes, Skills (bonus skills) and Traits.

Thanks for the feedback! Right now, we've got to keep our focus on the start up experience for the average player. We're sure to add more bells and whistles for advanced players later, but we have to prioritize where we spend our time.
