I really like the ship-to-ship combat system.
I'd like both sides to have the option to surrender during combat (NOT just during the prelude to combat).
Do you have to board the opponents ship in order to get any loot other than salvage? (I haven't tried boarding yet.)
It seems reasonable that you might Torp an opponent into submission, and they would surrender before you destroyed them. If that were allowed, one might also be able to bluff surrender, and then attack when the opponent got closer or tried to board.

You just have to destroy the ship's ability to fight back or force the Enemy Captain to surrender. Boarding is not required at all for this, but it does make it a bit easier. My preferred approach is to soften them up with torps, move in and disable their engine. Boarding is fun, but can be really dangerous at higher difficulty levels. Enemy Captains already DO have a way to surrender during combat! Fixed The player will be receiving a similar button, but a lot of the time it will lead to death.

How do you aim in close ship to ship combat? How about aiming with at the 4-5 range? Like in STRPG you had an option to aim at the general ship, crew, sails or engines.

Your Crew automatically aims for you. Increase your buffs, critical hits and accuracy to more quickly take out the Engines, Crew or Ship. Attack Talents perform really well here.

Do specific weapon types lean towards targeting a particular area? (engine vs. crew vs. ship)

Do specific weapon types lean towards targeting a particular area? (engine vs. crew vs. ship) Critical Chance directly means "chance to hit Bridge or Engines" with the goal being to destroy either the Captain, or the Engines to win. Radiation Damage and Void Damage are critical to taking out Components. What you want to do, ideally, is score several critical hits AND do a bunch of Radiation or Void Damage in a single turn. That way you'll have a higher chance to take out the Engines in a single blow.

Hmm... interesting food for thought. I think I know what profession I'm going to try next.
