So I just started a new Pirate Captain and decided to try the Dragoon Cruiser.
Right off the bat, I see on the Status screen that Life Support = 30, but Crew = 38/40.
What's the deal? Am I supposed to airlock the 8 people I like the least right from the start? I don't mind, it's just odd, that's all.

You don't need to airlock anyone... I 've been using the Dragoon Cruiser and it can support 40 crew just fine.

Just a bug in how maximum crew for those ships is calculated. This will not be fixed in v1.0.27, probably won't be fixed for a while. Do me a favor ... can you both play a few games on Dragoon Cruiser and tell me if you think it is "Totally OP" or "Completely OP"

It's my first time in this alpha playing anything other than a torp machine. Will see how it goes!

Do me a favor ... can you both play a few games on Dragoon Cruiser and tell me if you think it is "Totally OP" or "Completely OP" Well, already I have one thing to report. I created a Dragoon Cruiser captain on Normal. I found a nice Soldier with +5 Medical and +5 Tactics and said, promote that man before he gets a job as officer on some other ship and deserts me. I let all my officers take 1 job level in whatever they had as a starting job, so one Pilot, one Gunner and I forget the other one. Experience was level D on the template, so they aren't experienced at anything. Here is how I look, soakwise at the start. I would have expected my inexperienced crew to have a much worse time learning how to fly a Dragoon Cruiser than they were in flying Jurors, Paladin Cruisers, Guardian Interceptors and the other ships I have tried. This seems to be exactly wrong. Those poor souls had to fly around in an understaffed condition until they went up a few levels. So unless you made things easier for everybody, I would say that something is wonky in the soaks calculation for this ship.

grävling the difference between the 7000 ships and the smaller ones is numbers of crew. You've got 10 more crew on that ship than you can have on a 6100 hull but the difference in soak is minimal at start. I also have found the 5000 hull ships very easy to overstaff at or near start and they can handle the same max crew with upgrades as the 6100 hulls.

The question Cory Trese wanted studied was 'is the dragoon cruiser massively overpowered'? I'd say 'easiest ship to operate for low-level characters' counts in the Overpowered discussion, so I brought it up.

The Dragoon Cruiser has a cargo bay of size 30, vs 50 in the Paladin Cruiser. When shopping for a larger cargo bay, I found that I was already in the middle size of 3, with there being a smaller one that stores 25 and a larger one that stores 36.
(Well, it says +36, but I don't think that if I paid the price for it I would get total cargo of 66.) Should I file this one under 'This is a warship, not a cargo liner! and don't you forget it!? There seems a shortage of large components you could axe to get more cargo capacity, at any rate.

There seems a shortage of large components you could axe to get more cargo capacity, at any rate. Both 7000 hull ships only had one Cargo bay as the Large Component slot required for the second bay you have in the 5000 and 6100 hull ships is taken up by one of your drives. Haven't tested yet myself but you may be able to downgrade that drive to the next size lower which makes it a medium sized component and then install a second cargo bay. Not sure what effect this would have on performance and in any case will require a substantial amount of credits. Only other option if you can make the swap is to install a Scout bridge in place of the regular bridge, however look for your soaks to take a major hit if you go that route and again it will be an expensive proposition though not as bad as the first. Final option is to replace some small components with the smuggler compartment (provides 6 cargo). Note at least for me a Grand Hold (36 cargo) and a Smuggler Compartment combined provide enough Cargo space for normal trading activities while running missions. Guess if your heavy into exploration and tend to create huge stashes of goods then more cargo capacity may be in order.

I don't think that you can downgrade or upgrade a component into a different size class. Hadn't realised that the Smuggler comparment gave you extra room. Thanks for that tip. I just am making regular trips between a farming world, an industrial world, and a large pop centre, and would just love to carry somewhat more, if I could.

You say that, but you need a small fortune to upkeep a 7k Hull beast, plus you'll stop every other planet to refuel.

The 7000 hulls have Hyperwarp Engine 5 which is a large component. The lower ratings of Hyperwarp engines are all medium components. As far as I've seen main difference in Hyperwarp Engine types is Fuel economy and the amount of soak they provide. Now if Cory Trese and fallen have designed it so that a Hyperwarp Engine 5 or 5E is minimum for that hull size and larger then yeah you'll need to find another large component to swap out. Note the Broadsword tease post has a Hyperwarp 3 (medium component) engine and it's an even larger hull than the 7000s so should be no issue downgrading the engines on the 7000 hulls.

Engines are Mass rated so that a Mass 3400 Void Engine can shift a maximum mass of 3400. You can uprate engines but it will not gain too much, bit of agility and speed. If you down rate your engines below the mass of your ship you should not be able to warp jump. Hyperwarp drives are matched to the void engine, since they both need to shift the same mass.
Looking at the Broadsword Class think that it has the wrong engine and hyperwarp drive specspec, but until I can uplift to the new version I only have the wikki for reference.

Dead. Got jumped by a Rychart Pirate in a Juror. And we are at War with Rychart. I was certain we could handle this. (Wasn't certain we could handle the repair bill afterwards, but, the honour of the House was at issue. What kind of military officer backs down from a Juror when he's in a Dragoon Cruiser?) Live ones it seems. In two rounds, my bridge was destroyed and my poor self along with it. Playing on Normal, I did ressurect -- but the repair bill is crippling. I will start another captain.
