So here I am reading the Pick a Faction descriptions as part of making my first 1.0.27 captain.
Cadar Syndicate ...By far the most powerful Syndicate in Military terms...
I can see all the Steel Song Zealots sharpening their swords as they read that.
I suppose the idea is that Steel Song is a House, and not a Syndicate. In ST2 does the distinction matter?

Honestly most of that is just flavor text. However since there is supposed to be real distinction between Clans and Syndicates the text does accurately describe Cadar as being the most militaristic of the Syndicate factions. I think of them as a sort of parallel to Steel Song's position amongst the Houses.

Well, that was the question. In ST2 will the Syndicate/House distinction matter?

Well, if there's to be a distinction between house and syndicate, there should be a further distinction for clans. There are 3 syndicates, 2 houses, and 4 clans. Aside from the eye-candy text, there probably should be a bit of lore attached to what the differences are between the three.

grävling , I'm pretty sure the Cadar description in STRPG also says Cadar are the most militarily powerful Syndicate. The reason Cadar and SSC have such a rivalry is because Cadar is the most militarily powerful Syndicate, while SSC is the most powerful Clan. The lore book draft goes into detail about the lore differences between Houses and Syndicates. From a gameplay point of view, Houses are more likely to have friendly relations to each other, and hostile relations to Syndicates. Likewise, Syndicates are more likely to ally with other Syndicates, and have negative conflicts against Houses. Well, if there's to be a distinction between house and syndicate, there should be a further distinction for clans. There are 3 syndicates, 2 houses, and 4 clans. Aside from the eye-candy text, there probably should be a bit of lore attached to what the differences are between the three. I'm pretty sure Clans and Houses are in the same category. Both names imply they have governments controlled by ruling families.

Honestly most of that is just flavor text. Actually it is a description of the bonuses given to every Faction zone. Every Cadar zone gets a Military Rating bonus, for example.

Well, that was the question. In ST2 will the Syndicate/House distinction matter? Massively. There are already more than 50 rules driving that, but we'll probably find space for another 100 or so before we're done. ST RPG has 47 rules related specifically to unique differences between Factions and Houses. I think ST2 will probably have 3 times that, given that Contacts, Traits, Contact Links are new adds to this ruleset.

Why am I still amazed when you tell me such things?

Some examples:
- Clans Contacts more likely to Born to Royalty - Syndicate Worlds more likely to have increased Trade Regulation - Syndicate ships more likely to have Doctors on board for (+Doctor) - Clan ships more likely to have Combat Medics on board (+Doctor) - Clan Contacts more likely to Hate Syndicate Contacts - (Cadar) Contacts unlikely to form ++relationships with (Thulun, Javat) - Clans more likely to declare Trade Wars on Syndicate - Syndicates more likely to declare Spy Wars on Clans/Houses - ... that was just the first page of a 18 page search results

So much goes on behind the scenes to make this game work just as the lore says things should.

I'd actually like to know all 18 pages.
I just learned that my Javat doctors should be Combat Medics instead of normal office doctors.
Maybe that's why my turnover rate for doctor is so high, my crew is making fun of the pansy doctor who doesn't even know how to hold a pistol.

Takes a long time to translate code into the list Cory shared. We've got to focus our hours on development priorities atm.

That part would be 100% in your mind -- those are just rules that differentiate Clans and Syndicates in the ship generator. That part at least doesn't apply to your Crews, unless you take it on as a flavor feature.

Out of curiosity, which Conflicts are each Faction most predisposed to?
