I'm starting to dabble in espionage--one officer is a Spy. Do Data Records require some free space in the cargo hold?
As a Merchant my holds tend to be full of goods.

The Rychart Depth Scanner +60% data records not too shabby.

I have no idea what the Data Chamber does, since you can carry data without it. Rychart Depth Scanner is pretty specialized but a 60% buff is big.
I've done my first bit of spying with my current captain. He has one officer with the Spy job at level 5. I spy opporunitistically. I check on Spy as I pull into a system and when the cost/benefit ratio is good, i spy. The data records seem to take no space, so can collect them, and hold onto them for an extended period of time. The challenges are that you can only sell records to certain types of contacts and the sale impacts reputation. For one sale, I got a clear warning about impact on reputation. My most recent sale said the conflict during which the records were collected was expired. It gave no indication that reputation was impacted, but I wonder if there was still some impact (unfortunately, I didn't check rep prior to selling, so I'll have to keep an eye on this next time.)
I'm enjoying a bit of Spying and Exploring on the side as a way to make ends meet.
I've also hit the Xeno lottery twice by defeating small xeno craft in ship-to-ship combat. The salvage for those was worth over $20,000 each time. Goes a long way to defraying expenses.

"I pull into a system and when the cost/benefit ratio is good, i spy." How can I see this cost/benefit ration? I've been selling blind. Yes being limited to selling records to a specific type like a Diplomat can be a pain when the distance is great. I haven't tried selling them to an Intelligence Officer contact yet, but if they don't buy them I think an ST2 update should make it available. "I'm enjoying a bit of Spying and Exploring" I'm having great fun with this too. The remove risk card synergy is very good if you have a visa versa 2 Officers. Great post +1

When the game started the salvage was 2,000, i.e. you might get more damage than that. So I have been running away from these tiny fights as being -- NOT WORTH IT!! Thank you, thank you, now I will eat these baby xenos ....

I accidently killed a Xeno in my scout cutter on the first round of combat while trying to escape...

John Robinson, there is no cost/benefit ratio displayed in the game. I was referring to looking at the pluses and minuses on the cards, taking into account my ability to remove a card, and deciding based upon that. Sometimes I'll take a risk if the odds are against but there's a card I really want--like a reputation bonus card. I also tend to avoid the 'enter into conflict' cards, as I'm trying to avoid negative rep. Except with that hated DeValtos syndicate--curse them and their money grubbing ways.

Me too I use the cards the same way. I don't know why Rychart hates me, but someday when I can afford it. One of my cargo bays will become a fighter bay. Revenge!

Currently Records take no space. The original design included requirements for Data Chambers, and still may, else Records will be degraded with HW jumps.
Currently, Data Chambers have no use and will be removed if they stay that way.
