This award is for reaching Level 10 without "buying, selling or capturing any additional ships". What was one of the first things I did to feel a bit safer on demanding difficulty? Bought the escape shuttle upgrade! Reached Level 9 and got toasted - saved by my shuttle, but didn't get the award when I hit Level 10. I suspect I blew it when I bought the shuttle. Is that correct?

No ... owning the upgrade but not using it is fine - the game treats it as though you still have only had 1 ship. As soon as your starting ship blows up and you squeeze into the escape shuttle, you've moved onto your second ship.
Another way of putting it is ... number of bridges/cockpits you've had control of. You might have purchased the escape shuttle, but if you don't use it, you've technically never controlled a second ship.

but if you use it then you are Captain of Escape Shuttle and no award

Just paid for elite and noticed that, although free had this (and others) marked as completed, elite tells me I have yet to achieve it. I copied my entire roster and uninstalled free so I can't check what went wrong. Doh!

your Copied captains probably just need to visit the Hall of Records and claim the Elite editions

Oh oh ... Alienfodder, your importing of captains only imports the following: The captain (obviously) His current ship His current cargo.
Nothing else. No docked ships. No caches. No factional conflicts or rumors, and most important to note ... No Awards.
If your captain meets the requirements for particular awards, then when you go visit the hall of records, they will be awarded. Caveat to note - the award check is done at the time you go to the Hall and record your exploits. This means that: 1) if you had flown the starting ship to level 12, but changed to a new ship after that, the hall will see that you have had 2 ships when you went to record your exploits and not award you the Hardcore Ultra. 2) if you have achieved rank x within a few years of starting the game, but have since played multiple more years after that, then those awards will not be granted because again, the time that you tried to record the exploits is the current game time.

No biggie. Didn't take me long to earn them again. I do remember importing captains and immediately going to the palace to claim awards. I'm almost certain I got a couple that later disappeared, but not certain enough to state such.

there is no code in the game to delete an award. It is stored in a database which is controlled by the Android OS. There is a specific string of text "DELETE FROM AWARDS" which would be required to facilitate the removal of an award.
That text does not exist in Star Traders RPG. There is literally no function that can remove an award.
Your SD card could be failing to save changes and you see in memory copies, the SD card fails, then you see the old data from the SD card. But if the Award was successfully inserted, it could not be removed by Star Traders RPG (at least, not without a solar flare, damaged SD card or modified binary code (have you been making binary changes?))

sadly, I have seen recorded awards vanish sometime after deleting the dead captain who earned the award......in both versions. Usually after creating and playing (for a significant amount of time) a new captain or 3.
