Would you be open to dropping/lowering the Heat cost on laying down OW? It's literally pointing your gun in a direction and waiting for something to walk into your FoV... I would be much happier with the Heat cost coming solely from actually firing your weapon, even if that means you need to raise the Heat cost for firing your weapons with OW engaged.
Worth asking, as I found myself in an awful situation where both my Soldiers were *badly* overheated and I had to decide which one to lay OW with even though I wasn't sure if anything was going to walk into it. At any rate, consider it wished and as always thanks for the consideration!

En1gma - no, it isn't a cost we will reduce for OW. That is the cost of locking the mech in place and setting the gun and sensorkit for rapid defensive fire. Xeno are moving really fast, so this is entering a defensive stance, not just pointing a gun. For a balance standpoint, the Heat cost is very important. And, I think the situation you described is exactly the kind of balance trade off that works within the game's Heat framework

Good to go, thanks for the consideration and the context!

It is also important to note that when you lock into OW, you only pay the Heat cost on the first turn. So, choosing good defensive chokepoints and holding to them will pay out big in Heat reduction over time.

Also good to know, something for my next in-depth which was likely going to include OW as a large focus. Learn something new every day.

Also on subsequent OW turns you still have all 6 MP to reduce heat further

bookworm21 - exactly right. I think all of this leads toward the fact that -- the Heat cost to lay down OW is very small, if you are able to maintain the same OW field of fire for multiple turns. If you are in situation in which you are going Burst Fire + lay down OW ... next turn, Burst Fire + lay down OW ... you're going to feel the extra burn. But, you might want to think up a better choke point or get some additional support.

Now... Another question:
How much heat do you gain per shot while OW is engaged?

It is equivalent in Heat cost to putting down an OW template.

So if you fire your weapon once or nine times, it still costs only six Heat, if I understand correctly?
I'm trying to get specifics because I'm interested in a thread to help people with advancing tactics to go up in difficulty level. Anything like this is greatly appreciated!

En1gma - this is definitely the place to start: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=569307048It is 6 per Shot. I misspoke earlier when I said it had to do with the cost of the Talent. It is just 6, arbitrary. Holding defensive position in OW and shooting lots of enemies is great way to crank heat. But shooting lots of enemies and staying in your OW for multiple rounds will generate far less Heat than dropping out every round.
