I dunno if this has been mentioned before - I did a very very quick skim through the forum to check and didn't see anything specific, but I'm 93.7% likely to be wrong.
What I would really love is the ability to take the squad that I have nurtured and grown to love on campaigns and skirmishes alike. It's that continuity thing just like developing a character in ST or CK. I want to be able to keep the Captain (and squad) that I nurtured through one campaign into the next one ... or take the team to a Skirmish. This would be especially important for me once the individual characters are customizable (names / icons / classes) in some future update.
Why ... being able to relate to the team that you are controlling means that you feel more invested in the way that team performs and succeeds. If you have to play a generic squad for each individual campaign, you feel less connected to the team and it becomes more of a throw-away type of feel. "Oh well, the team got obliterated. I'll just start up another generic squad" kinda thing.
Sure, having more established characters (skills / weapons) means that some game balancing issues may need to be considered in campaign development, but I think the attachment value of a specific team could be more important for long-term enjoyment.

Yeah, they're all generic.
1st names of Azrael, Huron, Juron, Martius and Corvin are pretty common.
I have 13 squads by now and all of them have at least 2-3 members with these names.

The newest release answers this question with a Skirmish Campaign.

Yay! Now I can reduce the number of saved squads!
BTW, Cory, when are we gonna get the technology to revive Fallen Templars? 'D

What about being able to increase difficulty with the skirmish squads? I deleted my original normal difficulty squad because they were so advanced, it was no challenge beating normal difficulty aliens and I didn't want to spoil the new skirmish missions by slaughtering aliens without any strategy. If they could "graduate" to higher difficulty it could maintain the challenge
