I'd like it if it were guaranteed to have a 4+ starport so that you could immediately make some ship alterations if so desired.

I don't think that will matter as much once we get pre-game Ship customization. Additionally, it is a bad idea (in my opinion) to start spending your starting creds on upgrades when they should be going to cargo/fuel/crew/etc

That will depend on how pre-game customisation works -- but yes, if there is enough flexibility there, there will be no need to immediately head for the starport.
Currently I am finding that if, on day one, I throw away one or 2 weapons that I have no intention of using and replace them with prison cells/passenger cabins/another officers cabin/a medical bay/actually anything that has no skill requirements/ life goes much better for my poor captains, because suddenly the ship is not placing as much of a demand on the crew.

If anything, I would ask for a planet offering the full range of standard ship recruits, so I can fill in any crew gaps. I know its only a game, but I still feel bad hiring some random Crew Dog and then firing them at the next planet because they have the mechanics that I actually wanted.

I feel like that too.

Thanks for the feedback. As a tutorial is rolled into the game, we will cover these early game improvements (even if you aren't playing the tutorial).

Map generation is different that starting planet. We cannot make map modifications on new game, but we can try as we go to improve the selector for new games.
