I would really like to be able to upgrade my Bridge.
I have two cargo holds that I rarely fill so I tried to swap out a cargo hold for a Capital Bridge in the hope that I could then replace the Bridge with other stuff. Unfortunately the bureaucrats at the starport say no! I cannot remove the bridge first because you need a bridge to fly. I cannot swap out the cargo hold first; I get the dialogue saying I will loose cargo space which is bad and just get the 'cancel' option. I don't think there is any point sacking an officer to provide temporary accommodations for the Captain since I think they will refuse to leave the Bridge. So I guess I'm on a fools errand.
I appreciate that the current situation is quite artificial since we cannot buy new ships, but looking ahead to the Broadsword class (which looks pretty fearsome), it has a Bridge and five cargo holds. If you are mostly mission focussed for your income, then being able to swap bridges would (in my opinion) be quite useful. You would have another option to increase soak as skills build and you would free-up a medium slot which have a wide range of alternate components available.
Would it be possible to put some component checks in place so that you cannot leave the starport unless you have one bridge fitted, but that let you swap bridges around please?

bobc: In the meantime (I haven't tried this) wouldn't installing a smuggler's cache first, then ditching your cargo hold work?

bobc : In the meantime (I haven't tried this) wouldn't installing a smuggler's cache first, then ditching your cargo hold work? Thanks for the suggestion, I'll try that but I'm not hopeful. You see, there is no problem swapping the cargo hold for a gun or exploration equipment, just for the Capital Bridge. A couple of iterations ago the game was fixed to prevent multiple bridges being fitted. So I think I'm caught between the 'no you cannot remove the bridge, you need one' and the 'no you cannot add a bridge because you already have one' scenarios.

It may be that each ship has, by definition, only one size possible for its bridge, and what you get is it.

That is probably the case, but I am really hoping otherwise!

That is probably the case, but I am really hoping otherwise! This is intentional. There will be other, smaller bridge updates, but you won't be able to move or change the size of the bridge. This won't be able to change, but we will make upgrading easier and provide more component and ship options.

fallen if you could help with an associated question regarding ship upgrades please? Do component effects for same components stack? If I install two Defense Pattern Matrixes will I get -4 fuel for jumps and +30% defence?

I'm really looking forward to getting the ship customisation UI upgraded, even if it isn't going to happen till stage 3
